Another Nokia Phone Canceled: T-Mobile Axes Nokia Nuron 2

In yet another blow to Nokia’s hopes of gaining a foothold in the US smartphone market, T-Mobile has cancelled plans to release the Nokia Nuron 2 — known internationally as the C5-03 — according to someone close to the situation. This is the second Nokia device to lose a place on US carrier shelves this week, following the X7 Journey, although that model was reportedly pulled by Nokia because it didn’t anticipate an acceptable level of marketing and subsidies from AT&T.

In a word

The N8 is a valiant effort from Nokia and definitely its best high-end smartphone to date. However, Symbian^3 is a big letdown and, while the N8 will satisfy multimedia and Nokia fans, it could struggle to attract business users against competition from the Blackberry, Iphone, and to a lesser extent, Android devices.

Nokia N900 Review

Design and construction

A handset this size could've only done with pure minimalist styling and in fact we find the N900 quite likeable. The sleek plastic at the back and the glossy fro nt certainly combine nicely and the simplified design (a bit too conservative as it might be) is pretty much what we'd expect in a workhorse like the N900.

The Nokia E71 has certainly spoiled quite a lot of users by making a point that great business handsets don't necessarily have to be fat bricks. But we are talking a completely different class and form factor here.

The sleek glossy front does get messy with use - fingerprints and all - but the rest of the handset is completely immune to those. We are quite fond of the particular type of plastic Nokia used on the handset (and other recent Nseries devices too - N97, N97 mini, N86 8MP) and we are not too bitter about the N900 having no metal on its body.

Web Browsing

The Nokia N900 uses the Maemo web browser, which is built with technology from Mozilla, the foundation behind Firefox. You can find more information about it from Maemo or Nokia, but there are a few things that I would like to point out:

Flash support: The N900′s Maemo Browser is the first mobile browser that I have tried that has Flash 9.4 support. Yes, it means that you can go to Vimeo, Hulu or Youtube (for desktops) and it works… but… video playback in a window is significantly slower than on a desktop machine, so although Flash support is there, the actual experience isn’t (yet). There are good news: in full-screen mode, Youtube videos run fast enough to be enjoyable. At the moment, that’s not the case for Hulu or Vimeo unfortunately

Hover mode: Some websites (especially Flash sites) do require a mouse cursor to hover above a user interface item. That thwarts many mobile browsers, but not this one.

Web apps: Google Docs and Google Wave work too, although sometimes very slowly. It is fair to assume that most web services and websites will work without any issues, in fact I have not found one site that was not fully functional, but complex sites (heavy use of Flash or Ajax) will often be too slow to use on the N900. Overall, the web experience is excellent, and it’s great that most sites don’t even need zooming, if you have sharp eyes.

Mapping: This Nokia N900 is loaded with Ovi Maps 1.0, which is quite a step down from Ovi Maps 3.0 as you can imagine. I have not found a way to download maps and use maps in “offline mode” to avoid map downloads (one of the best features of Nokia Maps to save $$$ while traveling abroad). There’s no Google Maps apps on the N900 (yet) so “street view” is another feature that I sometime miss. Google Maps also has much better coverage for places like Tokyo, Japan. In a pinch that might be very handy. Ovi Maps 1.0 is “ok” to get by, but I can’t wait to see something more robust.

Nokia C5,03 Review

Design:

The Nokia C5-03 is light on your pocket. And we mean it light as light in money, and light as 93-gram light in weight, which puts it somewhere in the top of our list of flyweight smartphones. The variety of looks comes bundled witheco-friendly materials   80 per cent of the body is recyclable, while half of the packaging is made from recyclable materials.

 The phone comes in a variety of color combinations with black or white choices for the body, which can be then paired with different colors for the bottom part.

Music

Nokia C5-03 offers great music quality as it is loaded with a high class music player with support for all the possible audio & video formats viz. 3GPP formats (H.263), H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, WMV. The player has features as music recognition, music playback, preset equalizer and album art cover. It also has an in-built stereo FM radio with RDS and Bluetooth stereo. Output is via the familiar 3.5mm headset that is common on Nokia phones. Nokia Ovi Music and Nokia Ovi store helps one to keep the phone updated with music and other latest contents.

the software area the Symbian^3 on this device yet still lost the fight between the two very powerful OS, but actually in the hardware feature the E7 is quite comparable bringing 16GB of internal storage, a HDMI out, 8 MP camera with Dual LED flash and Face recognition software. The camera is able to shoot video at 25 fps in HD quality 720p resolution, not mention its front-facing VGA (640 x 480 pixels) camera for video calling.

 Summary

The Samsung Galaxy 551 run on Android 2.2 Froyo right out of the box. To ease the transition for folks who have been used to a physical keyboard all these years, the Galaxy 551 will sport a physical sliding QWERTY keyboard. Of course, this won’t be at the top of the hill in terms of hardware specifications being a mid-range phone, but it is powered by a 667MHz processor, accompanied by a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen TFT display at 240×400 pixels, TouchWiz 3.0 UI, HSDPA 7.2Mbps, a 3-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, DLNA and Bluetooth connectivity, GPS support, an integrated FM radio, Social Hub, DivX support, 160MB of internal memory and a microSD memory card slot.

Camera

The Nokia C6 is equipped with 5 megapixel camera that can take pictures at 2584×1938 pixels. The camera features Autofocus, integrated LED flash, 4x digital zoom, Geotagging images and basic editing options like Settings for scene, video light, white balance and colour tone. The C6 also features secondary camera at front in order to facilitate video calling. You can also capture videos at 30fps in 16:9 aspect ratio. You can share the photos and video to social networking websites like Facebook, MySpace and etc. You have the provision of storing photos in Ovi Share.

The image quality is quite good, but it falls short of 5MP camera standards. The images are crisp and vibrant, bit less bright. The video quality is also mediocre. The Carl Zeiss optical lens is not used here.

Applications

The C6 has A-GPS to keep you on the straight and narrow, and the Symbian operating system gives you the power to install apps from the Ovi Store, including Nokia's excellent free sat-nav app. But the Ovi Store is much harder to use than the app stores found on the or Android handsets, such as. Just getting it fired up can be a challenge -- we were asked to update the store on our brand-new phone. Once you're in there, installing apps can seem like an endless round of cryptic messages and errors. Your perseverance is rewarded with sluggish performance once the C6 tries to run the app.

All you need to stay in touch

color 

There are three colours for Nokia C3. I prefer the slate grey option, which is more blue than grey and a nice enough shade. There are also hot pink (eek!) and golden white versions.

The outer shell is shiny and we found it rather attractive to greasy fingermarks. The back has a matt finish, which is easier to grip and less prone to smears.

camera

The 2MP camera on the C3 might seem to have huge lens, but does its duties poorly. The colors are fine, however detail and focus are almost non-existent. Photos look like you have been applying some special effect to them, while cursing and fumbling around with the lean camera interface.
The handset now has a dedicated multimedia gallery called Photos, unlike other Series 40 handsets, where all files are mixed up in a single location. Capturing videos produced appalling results, unless paltry QVGA resolution with 15fps sounds good enough for you.

The Nokia C3 runs on the Nokia’s S40 mobile operating system. You can access the  favorite contacts immediately above the display, so that  you can get in touch with them instantly. The favorite contacts will be listed horizontally and you call make call with just a click of a contact. Any updates from Facebook & Twitter w.r.t. to that contact will be displayed on the home screen itself. You can customize the home screen with dedicated widgets for the calendar, chat, email and organizer.  You can also download themes, wallpapers, games, widgets from the Ovi store. You can personalize your contacts with ringtones, pictures and more.
